“冷却塔” 是指可将水冷卻的一种装置。水在其与流過的空氣進行熱交換、質交換，致使水溫下降。

開式冷卻塔是利用水和空氣的接觸，通過蒸發作用來散去工業上或制冷空調中產生的廢熱的一種設備。基本原理是：乾燥（低焓值）的空氣經過風機的抽動後，自進風網處进入冷卻塔內；飽和蒸汽分壓力大的高溫水分子向壓力低的空氣流動，濕熱（高焓值）的水自播水系統洒入塔內。当水滴和空氣接觸時，一方面由於空氣與水接觸的直接傳熱，另一方面由於水蒸汽表面和空氣之間存在壓力差，在壓力的作用下產生蒸發現象，即通過與不饑含有的干燥大气热传递帶走了從這樣一種方式就可以將給予了給它降溫以達到減少在此過程中的能量消耗。
