"cooling tower" refers to a device that can cool water by exchanging heat with air. Water is cooled as it comes into contact with the air.
Our open-type cooling towers use water and air interaction to dissipate waste heat generated in industry or air conditioning systems. The basic principle is that dry (low-enthalpy) air is blown through the fan and enters the cooling tower; saturated vapor pressure drives high-temperature water molecules towards low-pressure air, resulting in wet (high-enthalpy) water being sprayed into the tower. When water droplets and air come into contact, both direct heat transfer between them occurs, as well as evaporation due to the pressure difference between steam on the surface of water and unsaturated dry airflow. This process brings away latent heat from some of the evaporated steam, effectively lowering the temperature of chilled water for its intended purpose.
Closed-type cooling towers utilize pipe wall thermal transfer to remove heat from fluids within pipes. Closed-type cooling towers have a distinct feature: additional pipes need to be added for circulation, where cold work fluid flows through steel pipes without direct contact with circulating coolants inside tubes; instead, they exchange heat through tube walls.
